If I Believe in Jesus, I will Stay Fit
April 17, 2013By Tiffani Knowles

Skillet-fried chicken, collards with ham hocks and macaroni and cheese were the normal staples found in the after-church dinner sale until very recently when black churches realized their parishioners were some of the unhealthiest in the U.S.

According to the National Institutes of Health in 2011, African Americans are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and cancer morbidity and mortality.

The church is a promising setting to address these health disparities, said the agency, and many churches have taken this charge seriously.

The "I Believe in Jesus Movement," founded in 2012 in South Florida, educates and encourages individuals on the importance of having a healthy physical and spiritual lifestyle.

On April 26, the IBJ Movement launches its Proverbs 31 Health Seminar at the Holiday Inn Palm Beach Conference Center, 1301 Belvedere Rd, West Palm Beach, Fl.

It is designed to identify 2 of 10 virtues found in Proverbs 31, which are beauty and health. These two topics are broken down into the following categories: physical fitness, spiritual fitness, physical make-up, and spiritual make-up.

The 10 virtues, originally inspired by the teaching of Melissa Ringstaff, author of The Homemaker's Journal, include faith, marriage, mothering, health, service, finances, industry, homemaking, time and beauty.

For health, IBJ will educate women on how to be healthy by utilizing a green-friendly nutritious system and discuss the dangers of an unhealthy lifestyle. Guest speakers will include Pinky Promise Movement founder Heather Lindsey and Alice Augustin, RN.

The concept of the green friendly system is to increase intake of vegetables and fruits such as broccoli, spinach, potatoes, carrots, avocado, apples, and bananas to enhance health. In the seminar,

Lindsey will demonstrate how to make a nutritious green smoothie on the go. The benefits of the green smoothie are a lasting source of energy that is low in cost, high in nutrients, fiber, provides hydration, and it keeps consumers full until dinner. In return, the consumption of the smoothies are said to improve skin, finger nails, and healthier hair growth. The only equipment needed to make the smoothie is a blender, and a pitcher, which makes it easy to store for 2-3 days in a refrigerator.

The ingredients consist of the following:

A handful of organic spinach

1Fuji apple

1 Asian Pear (both peeled & cored)

1/2 cup of ice

1 Banana

1 half of a avocado

3 Stalks of celery

1 cup of cold filtered water

1/2 of the juice of a fresh lemon

Alice Augustin, RN, will discuss some of the main concerns and diseases linked to women of all ages.

For fitness, they will have a Zumba session with Fitness Instructor Ada Stewart who will demonstrate the fun-filled, spirited dance workout designed to burn hundreds of calories, tone muscles, and lose inches in all the right places. The Zumba workout will have a combination of Latin-inspired, hip hop & various aerobic dance movements that is appropriate in content.

For beauty, the seminar will include a make-up activity to introduce the topic of spiritual make-up vs. physical make-up. Guest speaker is Heather Lindsey.

The Proverbs 31 Health Seminar will take place on April 26 at 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. and April 27th at 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.
