Is Rihanna Showing Christ-like Mercy?
March 20, 2013By Billy Delgado

King David slept with another man's wife and had her husband murdered. We know him as a man after God's own heart and great poetic King of Israel.

Abraham told the Pharaoh of Egypt that Sarah was only his sister (a "half" truth) to save his own life, putting his wife at risk. Yet we know him as a hero of faith who was God's friend.

The Apostle Paul was a relentless enemy of the first century church and sent men and women to prison and consented to their murders. Yet, he repented and we know him as Spirit-filled author of most of the books of the New Testament.

Pop singer Rihanna reunites with R&B singer Chris Brown and we know her as the hopeless romantic stupid girl who is attracted to bad guys.

We somehow throw forgiveness out the window and get lost in the sauce when a female celebrity, or even someone we know personally, re-kindles a relationship with someone we despise for being abusive. Somehow everything the Lord taught us about forgiving an offending brother 70 times 7 becomes an afterthought for "scum" like Chris Brown.

A quick recap of these two celebrities:

Chris Brown and Rihanna hook up in 2008.

Chris puts a hurtin' on Rihanna in 2009, which costs him commercials, gigs, endorsements, record sales and dignity.

Chris Brown starts to morph from a small-town clean cut choir boy to a Blonde, tattoo-covered "thug" with a gawky golden grill between 2010 and 2012, sprinkled with a few temper tantrums and court appearances.

In 2013, Rihanna admits what everybody already figured out. She is back with the Ex and the rest of us across the country are asking "What is she thinking?"

Never mind the fact that Chris Brown has apologized profusely on YouTube and on the Larry King show for losing his mind.

Never mind that he didn't have a criminal record or history of domestic violence before spazzing out on RiRi.

Never mind that Chris Brown is a fallible human being.

We all get indignant and appalled that Rihanna would be so foolish enough to date the same guy that made her a TMZ star for all the wrong reasons. I've heard people imply that she's going to "learn her lesson" when, if ever, Chris will physically abuse her again. It's as if they're anticipating for them to come to blows again so RiRi will finally realize how "dumb" she is.

.

Imagine if the Lord actually took the devil's accusations into consideration about our past mistakes?

"Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him." Zechariah 3:1

"The great dragon was hurled down-that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: 'Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down." Revelation 12:9-11

The Bible refers to Satan as "the accuser of the brethren" who accuses us night and day before God. He points out our failings day and night. He brings up our past. Says 'Aha!" when he finds us doing wrong and reminds all that we'll undoubtedly disappoint again and again. Could you imagine if the Lord gave pause to Satan's accusations?

"Ya know Satan, you do have a point there..."

We cannot preach a message of forgiveness and then scoff at Rihanna when she exhibits a Christ-like quality in the act of forgiveness and restoration. Most of us will come to forgive a person but how many of us can restore that person to a place in our hearts that they originally possessed?

Rihanna could have simply said, "Although, I will never date Chris again, I have forgiven him" and everyone would have been happy with that conclusion. No, she took it a step further and is now once again his paramour. She looked past the regretful night, the ever-growing branches of tattoos and apparent dramatic change Chris Brown undergone physically and allowed for the restoration of their relationship.

Please don’t get me wrong. I think that any woman who is in a abusive relationship should pack her bags and leave. It’s one reason why I currently live in Miami. My mother had to exodus New York when I was a young child in fear of an abusive ex. That’s exactly what the "Umbrella” singer did.

She left Chris Brown and, after much mending and healing, she received him back with open arms. She exemplified a Christ-like grace we don’t see very often in this unforgiving world. She could have remained friends, would have been well within her rights to keep Chris Brown at arm’s-length, but she restored him back to full BFF status. Seems crazy, doesn't it? And, it just maybe. That’s rare and, yes, she’s taking a risk. Chris Brown could go Wolverine again. Should we mock Riri for taking that chance, though? Did we mock Christ when He restored Peter?

I certainly was guilty of being an accuser. I remember telling my mother, "Don't get back with him again. He just wants you now that he has nobody. But when things go well, he'll do it again."

I didn't mind my mother forgiving my stepfather. I did mind very much if she had chosen to re-marry him. I just couldn't muster up the strength to be completely like Christ.

I know what you're thinking. This is different. It's not healthy or even Biblical that a wife remain in an abusive relationship. They need to separate. I don't see the word "separate" in the Bible, but I get the concern. The thing is, they DID separate and the restoration process took a matter of 3 years.

We may not like Chris Brown. We may roll our eyes at his fights in the club, backstage temper tantrums, and his....never-ending addiction to TATTOOS...but there is something that Rihanna sees in him that our fickle society does not. She's got a soft spot for him that is a borderline unconditional love.

Sound like someone we worship?

For God so loved the world that He GAVE. He gave us His grace. He gave us his unconditional love. He gave us his mercy. He gave us His lovingkindness and favor. He gave us His Son.

How many sins has He been willing to overlook and throw them into a sea of forgetfulness? Peter denied Christ three times. The Lord could have forgiven him and simply left it at that. He didn't. He restored Peter back to the position of the Lord's inner circle with John and James. He restored him among the 12 disciples and that loving forgiveness created an apostle who created the history we read now. He's moved as a loving Father when He sees His children fail and cry. He throws a party for us when we return to His far-reaching arms.

Do you know what the Lord answered after hearing the accuser's rant in Zechariah 3?

"The Lord said to Satan, 'The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you!'..." AND "See, I have taken away your sin..."

That's the character of God.

So when Rihanna displays this same quality that only love can inspire, it's something noble to meditate on in this cold world where "people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money.....without love and unforgiving."

Will Chris Brown ever lay a brutal hand on Rihanna again? Don't know. I can't predict the future. But would we laugh at Rihanna if such an incident happened again? What would we make fun of her for? Being forgiving?

Let not the body of Christ be accused of unforgiveness. God forbid!
