In almost every facet of life, people are gravitating more and more to authentic, unprocessed, all-natural products. We see this in the area of nutrition where many persons are becoming more aware of what they eat and are trying to maintain a healthier diet consisting of less artificial foods. We also see it in the area of medicine. Many are swapping their conventional prescription drugs for those good old time home remedies, which have much less, if any side effects.
The hair and beauty industry are following the same trend. If we pay keen attention, we will realize that a significant number of manufacturers of hair products are gradually switching from using harsh chemicals and are focused on including more natural ingredients. Sulfate-free and Paraben-free are proudly displayed on numerous products today. Some popular natural ingredients currently used in hair products are Shea Butter, Olive Oil, Avocado, Honey, etc.
I have been using my kitchen as my very own, at-home laboratory to create a
variety of different concoctions that my hair just loves.
My very favorite is the Avocado and Coconut Milk Deep Conditioner. It has
been very effective in providing my hair with much needed moisture and
sheen. Avocado used in a hair mask will strengthen and fortify your hair,
preventing dry, brittle hair from damage and breakage.
The homemade Avocado Coconut Milk Deep Conditioner boasts a combination of
ingredients which, when fused together, has amazing effects on my hair. It has
become my go-to deep conditioner, trusted and proven to revive and revitalize
my tresses. It is applied once per month, but for excessively dry or damaged
hair it can be used twice per month.
The Recipe
1 Medium Avocado
1/2 Cup Coconut Milk
2 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 Tbsp Honey
5 Drops Peppermint Oil
The Properties
Avocado - Avocados contain high quality essential fatty acids and are known for their buttery texture which is very effective in conditioning and softening the hair. Extending a much needed supply of vitamins and minerals, avocados help to maintain the overall health of the hair and promote greater elasticity.
Coconut Milk- Coconut milk contains proteins which strengthen hair and helps minimize breakage. Applying coconut milk to the hair supplies it with necessary nutrients to grow and provides optimal conditioning.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil- Extra Virgin Olive Oil is rich in Vitamin E, Vitamin A, biotin and antioxidants. Due to its ability to penetrate the hair shaft, this rich moisturizing oil can reach the cortex (the middle layer) of the hair, allowing the hair to feel conditioned, nourished and healthy.
Honey- The moisturizing property of honey makes it a natural humectant that can be safely applied to the hair. The high sugar content of honey helps to retain water and thereby maintains the moisture content of the hair. Retaining moisture will ultimately help to keep the hair cuticle soft. Honey also has anti-bacterial properties which aids in maintaining healthy scalp.
Directions
- In a blender, food processor or mixer, blend the ingredients together until it has a smooth, creamy, conditioner-like consistency.
- Pour the mixture into a container and apply to damp hair. Cover hair with a plastic cap and allow the treatment to sit in your hair for 30 minutes, (for added penetration, sit under a hooded dryer for 15 minutes) then rinse thoroughly.
- Follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner routine or your co-wash. Be careful not to use harsh shampoos as they can strip your hair of its moisture.
Expected Results: This fusion of natural goodness results in soft, shiny, moisturized and very healthy hair.
