Disney starlet Demi Lovato was on the international leg of her tour with youth heartthrob group, the Jonas Brothers, when she decided to seek help for emotional and physical issues. Multiple rumors surfaced over the weekend of October 29 after she deleted her twitter account unexpectedly. Three days later the Lovato family released the following statement:
"Demi Lovato left her tour early this weekend in order to seek medical treatment for emotional & physical issues she has dealt with for some time. She is not seeking treatment for drug use. Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help. She is doing just that. Demi regrets not being able to finish her tour, but is looking forward to getting back to work in the near future."
Lovato has been open about her past confrontations with bullies which led her to begin homeschooling.
"People say sticks
and stones may break your bones, but names can never hurt you, but that's not
true. Words can hurt. They hurt me. Things were said to me that I still haven't
forgotten," Lovato said in an interview with PARADE magazine.
Lovato has not only dealt with bullying, but has had bouts
with body image issues.
"I have a tattoo on
my rib and it says, 'You make me beautiful.' There was a song that inspired me
when I was younger and it helped me through a really rough time. I used to have
self-image issues," said Lovato in an interview with Hollywood Life.
Close family friends say that Lovato has been fighting with anorexia and self-harm (cutting) for a long time.
Disney issued a statement supporting Demi's decision to seek medical help and wishes her the best.
In 2008, Lovato starred in the Disney Channel film, Camp Rock. She played Mitchie Torres, a fourteen-year-old girl with hopes of becoming a singer. The movie premiered on June 20, 2008 on Disney Channel with 8.9 million viewers, making Lovato a household name among tweens. She provided vocals on four of the songs featured on the Camp Rock soundtrack, including "This Is Me" featuring Joe Jonas.
