Amina Tariq, a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) never got to promote her pro-vegetarian message, after Jordanian police said the one-woman protest was unauthorized on July 26.
Amina Tariq was dressed in lettuce that was attached to a green gown when she was quickly escorted to a nearby restaurant just minutes after arriving in Amman's Rainbow Street. She was arrested, then charged.
Senior PETA campaigner Ashley Fruno says that she contacted local authorities a month ago and they said she would not need permission as it would only be a one- person protest. Despite this, Tariq and Fruno were detained for three hours then released.
Tariq was protesting against animal cruelty and was asking people "to turn over a new leaf." The symbolism of the lettuce coincided with the placement card that Tariq was carrying before she was arrested that stated "Let Vegetarianism Grow on You."
