Say NO! to plastic bags

Paper or plastic? When it comes to purchases in Thailand, almost everything is put in a plastic bag. Even when you buy soda you will get it in two plastic bags with a few straws.

In an attempt to wean Thai residents off their plastic bag addiction - about 600,000 plastic bags used daily - the government and local authorities recently relaunched the "No Bag, No Baht" project.

The project offers consumers one Baht (or three U.S. cents) discount for every 100 Baht (almost three dollars) purchase if they use their own bags, while every plastic bag they use will cost them one baht.

According to the government and private sectors who signed the agreement, making people aware that the disposal cost is more than 600 million Baht (or $18.4 million) and that plastic bags make up one tenth of the 10 thousand tonnes of trash daily, is the first step.
For this campaign to be effective, consumers have to be made aware of the long tern effects of plastic bags to the environment, said Tara, a store clerk from a supermarket chain Tesco Lotus.

Next time you are shopping remember one plastic bag is better than two and your own cloth bag is better than plastic.
