Lil Wayne's Gig in the Big House
April 9, 2010

Lil Wayne, the rapper whose real name is Dwayne Carter, is now working on his prison career since pleading guilty in October to harboring a semiautomatic pistol on his tour bus in 2007.

The "Lollipop" rapper, who was locked up on a gun charge last month, is an inmate observation aide at Rikers Island, sources said.

The megastar rapper - who raked in $42 million last year -  is now earning somewhat less -- a cool 50 cents an hour.

Lil Wayne works the midnight tour and socializes with at-risk inmates.

"He mingles with them," the source added. "It's not a physical job at all, and it's better than working the kitchen or sanitation."

Suicide prevention aides, as they're also known, are recommended by correction officers or volunteer for the cozy gig. The chosen inmates must take courses to learn how to deal with their at-risk counterparts.

Lil Wayne is serving a one-year sentence for the gun charge.
