Beer Chat: Was it a Happy Hour?
August 5, 2009
President Obama hosted a meeting of reconciliation on the South Lawn at the White House on July 30. In attendance were President Obama, Vice-President Biden, Police Sergeant James Crowley and Harvard scholar Henry Gates, Jr. The four chatted over beer (the President, Bud Light, and the others Blue Moon and Red Stripe) in hopes of putting an end to the controversy that sparked after the arrest of Professor Gates two weeks ago.
A small group of camera people and reporters were permitted to witness the meeting only for about 30 seconds and from about 50 feet away.
Crowley said later that no apologies were exchanged between him and Gates. The police sergeant called the discussion Thursday "cordial and productive," but declined to offer specifics.
